Kate Valley Group is built on partnership. With councils, with mana whenua, and with the communities around us.
For more than 20 years, Kate Valley Group has operated as a public-private partnership, the longest standing of its kind in Aotearoa.
A partnership built to last
Kate Valley Group is owned by five Canterbury councils and WM New Zealand, working together to deliver essential infrastructure.
This structure brings public accountability and private-sector expertise together, with strong governance and long-term certainty built in from the start.
That long-term thinking has delivered economies of scale for ratepayers across Canterbury for two decades and continues to shape how Kate Valley Group plans for the future.
Kate Valley Group Community Trust
The Kate Valley Group Community Trust was established in 2005 to fund charitable and community activities in the local area, with its first grants distributed in 2006.
Its six trustees include two people appointed by Kate Valley Group, four elected from the community.
Kate Valley Group makes annual contributions to the Trust. Under the Trust’s deed, those funds go to projects and facilities that benefit the local community. Since 2006, the Trust has returned more than $1.7 million to groups and projects across community. Year after year, that support has helped send local young people on Outward Bound and Spirit of Adventure courses, alongside funding for schools, sports clubs, and community facilities across the region.
Kate Valley Group also welcomes schools, community groups, and organisations to visit the landfill, to see firsthand how a modern, highly engineered facility operates and how waste is safely managed in Canterbury.
Community Liaison Group
The Kate Valley Community Liaison Group enables regular, effective communication between residents in the Waipara-Omihi area, adjoining landowners, and Kate Valley Group.
It includes three representatives of property owners in the Waipara-Omihi area, two representatives of property owners along Mt Cass Road, and one representative of Kate Valley Group.
The Group meets quarterly with operating staff, to hear and discuss any community concerns, and receive updates on monitoring and reporting required under regional and district council consents.
Gareth James Memorial Scholarship
Established in honour of Gareth James, whose vision shaped Kate Valley, the scholarship supports students carrying that legacy forward.
